Are Black Russian Terriers the Breed for You?

Located in the beautiful coastal region of North Carolina, Guardian Bears Kennel is home to one of the most intriguing dog breeds - the Black Russian Terrier. The owners and breeders, the Hawkes family, are passionate and respectful of this breed and their passion makes these highly intelligent dogs an integral part of the family. A dedication to the breed has brought the family to focus on bettering the Black Russian Terrier through thoughtful selection and research of breeding pairs to help eliminate health issues that are present in the breed.

If you’re considering a Black Russian Terrier, there are a few things to think about before purchasing or adopting your new family member:

• A well bred and socialized Black Russian Terrier is loving toward its family and pack, yet reserved around strangers. With an instinct to guard and protect, your Black Russian Terrier will have high intelligence and remember experiences (good or bad).

• The Black Russian Terrier requires frequent brushing and regular grooming.

• Your Black Russian Terrier will require daily exercise.

• The BRT is a bearded dog and when it drinks, the beard carries water. While BRTs do not drool, you will certainly have a wet beard at times. If you do not like the idea of your dog spotting your furniture and other things with water, you may want to either consider a dog that is not bearded or groom your BRT with a short beard.

There is much more to know about the BRT before deciding on this breed. Visit our Characteristics page for more comprehensive information, and feel free to contact us at any time.
